Great Things To Know About The Theatre in the Park!

Our Vision Statement

The Theatre in the Park will be the leader in providing our audiences  with quality, affordable entertainment, and our  participants with rewarding artistic opportunities.

Our Mission Statement

To enhance the quality of life in our community by providing a variety of entertainment programs in a park setting through public and private partnerships.

The Theatre in the Park is one of the largest outdoor community theatres in the country. Each summer we present Broadway musicals, a series of concerts, and a variety of special events.

Our outdoor amphitheatre is located on 10 beautiful acres in Shawnee Mission Park with a separate entrance at 7710 Renner Road. Located just north of I-435 Highway and 87th Street, our facility is easily accessible from anywhere in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

An incredible weekend of auditions is held each spring and the casts for our shows are selected from these performers. Auditions for The Theatre in the Park are open to the public (ages 6 and up) and frequently draw more than 600 aspiring actors from throughout the community.

Our box office opens at 6:30 p.m., gates open at 7:30 p.m. and the shows begin at 8:30 p.m. Admission is only $8 for adults, $6 for youth ages 4-10, and children 3 and under are free. A variety of options for purchasing tickets in advance are available through our website www.theatreinthepark.org

Theatre fans bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets and come early to enjoy the park setting before the show begins. Each show opens on a Friday night and runs Friday through Sunday the first week, and Thursday through Sunday the following week(s). Typically, each performance lasts about 2 hours.

Regarding rainouts, it is the policy of The Theatre in the Park to distribute rainout passes to attendees if the show is cancelled due to inclement weather within 45 minutes of the show start. If 45 minutes or more of the show is performed, no rainout passes will be given. In accordance with our policy, no ticket refunds will be issued.   Rainout passes will be distributed by House Staff at the exit gates of The Theatre as attendees leave the facility on the night the show is called due to inclement weather. These passes will be valid for entrance into any future show production in that current Theatre season. Passes will not permit early entry.

The Theatre in the Park is handicapped accessible with reserved parking, ramps and wheelchair seating areas. Sign language interpretation is provided at select performances (contact the Theatre office for a schedule of interpreted shows).

The Theatre in the Park is supported by the generosity of many area corporations and foundations that believe in our program. These vital sponsors help finance our program with funds, materials, and/or service contributions. Less than 20% of our operating budget is from tax support.

The Theatre in the Park enjoys the vitality of its many volunteers. All of the performers and orchestra members generously donate their time. Volunteers also help with auditions, promotional events and clean-up projects at the Theatre facility. A wide variety of employment opportunities are available at The Theatre in the Park. Creative talents are used for set design, sound, lighting, costumes and props. Each summer dozens of area teens enjoy their first job working in our box office, the concession stand or with the parking staff.

The Theatre in the Park facility is available for rental for special events, corporate gatherings, public attractions, concerts and fundraising events.
