What should a parent expect of the Theatre in the Park Summer Academy for their child?

GROWTH – All participants of the Summer Academy will have personal goals to reach.  Our staff will identify each performer’s strengths as well as opportunities to improve.  We will help sharpen the performer’s strength and help them reach goals to better themselves in their area of opportunity.

QUALITY – The Theatre in the Park is known for high quality, entertaining, and spectacular shows.  This will transfer over into our productions with the Summer Academy.  Our goal is to send each participant away feeling like they not only put on an amazing show, but had a great time and learned new things to help them in their theatrical education.

FUN – Theatre is rooted in a single word, “play”.  Each day we will be working hard rehearsing, but in an uplifting and positive way that will always feel like playing.  Rehearsal time will be broken up with social and theatrical games to not only help participants create a bond with each other, but sharpen their social, improvisational, and performance skills.

KNOWELDGE – Our staff members are working professionals.  Theatre and Entertainment are what they do.  By hiring these individuals we expose your child to real world techniques and stories that they can take with them through their lives.

MEMORIES – We know that summers are important to families.  We want to make sure when you choose to do something in the summer, it’s something you will never forget.  Exposure to professionals, amazing shows, and cast bonding are all key factors to your child remembering Theatre in the Park Summer Academy for the rest of their lives.

What is TTIP's Summer Academy all about?

The Theatre in the Park is the largest outdoor community theatre in the country.  Each summer we present a season of Broadway style musicals.  This year we are excited to announce The Theatre in the Park Summer Academy,  a daytime theatre intensive for your child to continue theatrical education in a hands-on way.  Participants are able to participate and perform in  full Broadway style productions, all while being instructed by working professionals and instructors from around the United States.  Costumes, Props, Scene Work, Acting, Singing, Dancing and more will all be covered in their two-week session.  Sign up for all three sessions to get the most out of your summer!

What does each session consist of?

The Theatre in the Park Summer Academy (TTIPSA) will begin like any other production – auditions.  Our staff are on hand to put participants through a true audition process, and help them sharpen their audition skills.  After the session is cast, each cast member will work on their specific track – learning their choreography, blocking, music, and character development.  Staff members will help each individual participant sharpen their strengths, and improve where applicable, utilizing real world theatrical techniques.  Participants will help brainstorm and critically think through scenic elements and costumes for their show, and assist hands on with technical elements of their production.  After the audition and rehearsal process is over, it’s time to move into the Blackbox Theatre! Every show will have a distinct move-in session where they can get their bearings from the dressing room, to center stage!  After move-in, they will go through tech rehearsals and dress rehearsals, and top it all off with a public performance for their friends, family, and fans!

What shows are you doing?

TTIPSA’s inaugural season consists of Disney’s SLEEPING BEAUTY KIDS, Disney’s ARISTOCATS KIDS, and Disney’s THE JUNGLE BOOK KIDS.  Every two weeks we will stage full productions of all three of these shows.  That means your child can participate in three Disney favorites in six weeks from start to finish.  There’s nothing like putting on a show, and there will SURELY be nothing like putting on three full shows all while sharpening skills and learning fun new ways to participate in the art of theatre!

Where is this happening?

We are very excited to perform in the NEW Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center at 8788 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS 66208.  The new facility houses two rehearsal rooms, a dance studio, an art studio, and a state of the art, brand new Blackbox Theatre where the final performances will take place.

Who are the teaching artists for the academy?

TTIPSA is proud to bring in real working professionals for the summer.  Our teaching artists are from all over the United States from Washington to New York and even here in Kansas City.  These staff members have worked on things such as Missoula Children’s Theatre, Stagedoor Manor, VEGGIE TALES LIVE!, Walt Disney World Resort, American Voices, SCOOBY DOO LIVE!, Worlds Of Fun, and much, much more.  Our Teaching Artist biographies can tell you all about our summer staff!

What kind of certifications or background checks do these people have?

All artists with TTIPSA are CPR/First Aid/AED certified.  As TTIP employees, these teaching artists have been through Harassment Training as well as Background Checks.  We have not only chosen great PERFORMERS to help teach your child, but we have chosen great PEOPLE as well.  All have proven track records in Theatre for youth and are excited to get to work with the ridiculous talent here in Johnson County and the surrounding areas.

How much does it cost?

TTIPSA is $400 for a two week session, consisting of 9:00 – 4:00 instruction (or “rehearsal”) Monday through Friday and one public performance on the second Saturday.  There is a maximum of 30 participants per show per session, that’s only 90 spots a session so get signed up quickly! If you don’t sign up soon, you may end up on a waiting list!

Are there discounts available?

YES!  You immediately get a $25 discount when you sign up for all three sessions, instead of just one.  You also receive a $25 discount for additional children after your first participant!  Book before february 1, 2017, and take advantage of our $25 Early Bird Registration discount as well!  Discounts abound for the Summer Academy!

Are refunds available?

Each camper is required to pay a $100 non-refundable* deposit for each camp at the time of registration. This non-refundable deposit will be applied to your final balance.

The final balance for each camp must be paid two weeks before camp begins, and payment arrangements will be made at the time of registration.

*If something comes up and you aren’t able to participate in TTIPSA, and we have a "waiting list" for that session, we will refund your money. If there is no waiting list and we cannot fill your spot, we are sorry, but your money cannot be refunded.

I work from 9:00 – 4:00, can my child come early and stay late?

Yes!  For a nominal fee of $5 per day for early drop-off or $5 per day for late pick up, we have Open Studio time before and after camp where your child can continue to work on instructional aspects of the camp within a safe and encouraging environment.  We will need to know by 4:00pm the day before you plan to utilize open studio time. Open Studio time will fill quickly, so we encourage parents to sign up early for this opportunity.

For more information about open studio time before and after Academy hours, please email Devin Rumley or give her a call at 913-826-3163.

Is lunch provided?

No, lunch is not provided. You should bring your lunch, and a snack with you to the Academy. (Please avoid bringing peanuts as a snack. Lots of people are so allergic to peanuts that they have a hard time being in the same room!)

I still have questions.  Who should I contact?

Devin Rumley is your go-to person and you can reach her via email or give her a call at 913-826-3163.
